OUR HISTORY

In 1987 Elkins Mountain Schools opened its first residential program to keep at-risk male adolescents in-state and closer to their homes, schools, and communities.

Since those early days Elkins Mountain Schools has evolved; keeping up with the best practices, research data, and ensuring quality care and treatment for clients and families.

Since 1996 Elkins Mountain Schools has been accredited by The Joint Commission, a national organization that sets standards of care for consumers receiving medical and behavioral health services.

In 2001 Elkins Mountain Schools opened a 15 bed Level II residential program in an adjacent community, Gilman, located approximately five minutes from the Main Campus.

In 2024, Elkins Mountain Schools transitioned both of its campuses to Residential Intensive Treatment (RIT), becoming the first in West Virginia to offer this innovative model of care to youth across the state.

In partnership with the West Virginia Department of Education, Elkins Mountain Schools provides an on-campus school for clients.  Adolescents with special learning needs are provided Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) with inclusion learning consistent with state and federal standards.  The school also provides a Transition Specialist who assists clients in their transition back to public school.
